What We're Praying/Talking About

Our faith in action, or our small contribution in trying to apply what we're taught in Hebrews 5-6 and James 2:17-26 for the benefit of our dear brothers and sisters within the Body of Christ...

About Semantics

There are MANY THINGS that upset me about the mainstream media. However, here's an example of what angers me the most.

What do you notice about the following headlines describing the horrific events in India over the past few days?

India: Who Are The Militants Who Attacked Mumbai?

Why do they INSIST on using the word "militant" as opposed to the word "terrorist" to describe these murderous barbarians? It's absolutely maddening to me!

It might seem somewhat insignificant if you give it just a casual glance, but think about it for a moment. It's nothing but a subtle form of deception (surprise, surprise! deception continues to rule the day!) that has been most effective in convincing a large amount of the world community (especially the American public) that we no longer face the kinds of threats we once did immediately following 9/11 despite what the security and intelligence communities tell us otherwise.
I'm not exactly sure when this began, but I do distinctly remember the first few times I noticed this nation's major newspapers using the word "militant" exclusively to describe these types of people and their destructive acts rather than the more appropriate word "terrorist."

They know what they're doing to because just stop for a minute to consider both words. One conjures up all sorts of heinous thoughts and ugly feelings while the other makes it sound like these people are a bunch of freedom fighters trying to gain recognition to their cause from an evil, tyrannical government authority.

Nothing could be further from the truth! How vile and deceptive! When did we start to allow our national media to get away with this type of shoddy reporting?

I guess if they were to continue using the word "terrorist" and all its related derivatives regularly over these past few years perhaps that would be counter-productive when it came to advancing their Liberal, Leftist political agenda.

Worse, perhaps it would've vindicated George Bush and his "controversial" decisions and policies to fight terrorism worldwide in an effort to protect this great nation and our interests as well as those of freedom loving, innocent people everywhere.

Can't have that now can we? A classic case of the politics of semantics for sure.

On a related side note, mainstream media coverage of these rampaging, cold-blooded murderous acts of jihad terrorism in Mumbai consistently ignored the clear ideological linkage to Islam as well. I guess in that sense this is also a classic study of 21st century reporting as taught these days in Journalism 101 classes on college campuses across the country.

Oh yeah, that reminds me.
The batch of terrorists who reached Mumbai on boats a few days ago to execute the worst terror attack on India had killed and thrown off-board three members of the crew of Kuber, the Indian trawler they hijacked, and beheaded the fourth, Amarsinh Solanki, whom they let live longer to help them with navigation.

Modus Operandi (read "decapitation") certainly casts doubt on which religious terrorist organization blame should be placed, as numerous religious doctrines find decapitation as an acceptable method of murder. This will undoubtedly take some intelligence agencies, and especially the corporate media, months to sort out, as the Northeast Intelligence Network accurately stated.

In fairness, there are some news groups who are doing the sensible thing and reporting this story accurately. Some have even referred to this as "India's 9/11" so you can get a feeling for the impact this is likely having on that part of the world.

Still, my hope is that regular Look Up Fellowship readers are too good to fall for the "lame-stream media's" tricks, and that you read and consume EVERY BIT OF NEWS with care.

Reminds me of something one of my college professors once said: "The media doesn't necessarily tell us what to think, but they do tell us what to think about."
