Unfortunately, a lot of the news that's reported on here is negative. Welcome to the end times. So, it was quite refreshing to read this story today.
I'm not sure if you'll find this in any of the major newspapers or on tonight's evening news broadcasts, but it's worth mentioning that the state of Kentucky has in its law that Homeland Security officials should turn to God when faced with terrorist threats.
When Kentucky formed its state Office of Homeland Security in 2006, it listed the department's initial duty as "stressing the dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the Commonwealth."
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Homeland Security must proclaim God's protection in its reports. The office also features a plaque at its Emergency Operations Center declaring, "The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God."
State Representative Tom Riner (D-Louisville) included the stipulation to acknowledge God in an amendment to the legislation. Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved it, according to the report. The office is now required to put God above all else – including allocation of government grants and threat-risk analysis.
Riner, a Southern Baptist Minister, told the Herald-Leader giving God glory for his protection is of utmost importance. "This is recognition that government alone cannot guarantee the perfect safety of the people of Kentucky," Riner said. "Government itself, apart from God, cannot close the security gap. The job is too big for government."
Like those who mocked Atlanta's Governor Sonny Perdue when he organized a public prayer session for rain to help with a vicious drought, I'm sure this news will be met with similar sentiments. It's unfortunate too (and not just because Perdue's public prayer vigils actually helped in a dramatic way in yet another story the media followed to properly report and follow-up on).
That's ok though because we know that the one true God we serve is EXACTLY who he says He is and that He will bless those who aren't afraid to acknowledge Him like this in today's world. In these troubled times the sooner we realize that the only thing we need to put our complete faith and trust in is God, the better.
Perhaps we we so many others who are willing to publicly proclaim the need for us to turn back to God and away from our comforts and possessions. It would seem that this could be the case as I've also just read about an Evangelist who is seeking a national prayer day for the economy because he says, "The answer isn't dollars; it's turning back to God." Amen!
Ironic too since we've just spent the last week looking at the Book of Haggai and it's potential message for contemporary America to turn back to God. Ah, Synchronicity smiles at us once again!
In any event, leave it to the Bluegrass State to show me that there actually are some true-blue Christian Democrats left in this country. Equally refreshing to know that.
God bless the elected officials in Kentucky. God bless Mr. Riner.
