Discerning The Times is asking a very serious question today: "Are the recent events in India a warning to the Church?"
Before you dismiss the insinuation much like those who ridiculed Jerry Falwell for suggesting soon after 9/11 that perhaps it was a judgement from God upon our nation, please consider the facts.
- The horrible plight of our Brothers and Sisters in Christ and rampant persecution of the Body of Christ there in India. Rape, murder, torture, and kidnapping are just a few of the unspeakable acts of violence against Christians in that part of the world. Hindu extremist groups are even offering money, food and alcohol to anyone who murders Christians and destroys their homes.
- Christians are being herded into government detention camps.
- Christians are strictly forbidden from meeting to worship God and to fellowship with other believers.
- Plan for Unique Identity (UID) system of personal identification numbers has been approved and it will be implemented throughout India by 2010. The program simply expands upon the current system that's in place where extremists demand that identity cards be shown to prove a person's religious affiliation. These cards are all Biometric and hold the "measurement of each man" through his/her "Unique Identity" via Fingerprint, Iris, Palm and Vein. In fact, the Stock Exchange in India and its Traders all have UIN's or they cannot trade stocks.
Whether or not God allowed these attacks to happen as a form of judgement is something that only He knows. Yet, we do know that God has historically used heathens to bring judgement and punishment upon nations.
Regardless, Christianity is India's third-largest religion with approximately 24 million followers that constitutes about 2.3% of India's population.
Let's continue to pray for our Brothers and Sisters even as we consider this poignant question.
