"Churchianity" is a term coined by Brother D of the Christian Apostasy blog. It describes the sad state of institutionalized Christianity in this day and age, as well as points the finger at the so-called "religious leaders" who are leading their flocks astray at the most critical and urgent time in all of human history.
Wes from Kingdom Studies wrote a brilliant commentary last week titled "My Rant", which catalogs his frustrations with the Church and its leadership.
It is such an accurate and emotional column that I wanted to reference it here for all of you to read. For me, it struck a chord on so many levels as Wes definitely captured and expressed the same feelings I'm dealing with regarding my own church.
Look, no one's perfect and I'm not saying "I'm too good for church" or that I don't recognize the benefit and value of fellowshipping with a congregation in a church setting. What I am saying is that too many people -- so-called Christians and those that lead them in worship -- just don't seem to get it.
Maybe it's just me, but if I was given the role of leading a worship service I would begin by asking everyone to humble themselves before God, repent of their sins, and seek His face with a genuine and heartfelt interest. I would then spend the rest of the time speaking to all that were in attendance about how end times prophecy is being fulfilled all around us, and that the fulfillment of some of the major prophecies were imminent. I would then wrap up by trying to help everyone prepare spiritually for the battles to come. I don't know why, but lately all I crave are the sermons -- the message and truth of God's Word -- not the ritualistic, repeat-after-me, I-say-this-then-you-say-that type of service. Again, not saying that it doesn't have it's place and that it's not important, but at this late hour there's gotta be more! We can do so much better, can't we?
Why does church feel like High School? What I mean by that is why is it that far too many people within the church stick to their own cliques, sit in the same rows of the pews week after week, and barely make eye contact with you let alone smile or nod their head even if you make the first move? Am I being too harsh? Too demanding? I always thought that Christians were supposed to be a peculiar people, a different breed of humanity serving as the salt and light in this world not just to the lost and unsaved souls, but to each other.
I remember when I was first saved back in late 2003 it was only a mere month into my new life in Jesus that I spent an entire week creating something like 5 or 6 100+ page 3-ring binders jam-packed with as much information as I could get my hands on regarding Bible prophecy. I was on fire and so very passionate about our Lord and His unfolding plan for the world that I wanted to share it with anyone who would listen to me. Those 5 or 6 binders were made with specific people in mind who I knew were interesting in studying such things. So, I finished them within a week, called up those people to tell them about it, and asked if they wanted to join a home-based Bible Study Group that would focus solely on the end times. They all said yes and the Look Up Fellowship was born! That's where I came up with the name for this online community.
The meetings were once a week at first and they lasted for 1, 2, sometimes 3 hours at a time! It was great to share my passion with like-minded believers as we applied the iron sharpens iron mantra. However, as is always the case it seems, life got in the way and it forced each of us one-by-one to pull back and withdraw. Soon, the weekly meetings became bi-weekly to once a month and then to none at all. What a shame.
My point with all of this is that Wes is absolutely right when he writes that: "People are hungry for God. They are hungry for the truth of the gospel. They are fed up with 'institutional church', and the 'gimme gimme' attitude of today’s so called leaders."
Perhaps it's time to consider starting a local Bible Study Group that can get together on a regular basis here in Buffalo, NY. We'll have to see what the Lord has to say about that. In the meantime, I'll continue to rely on the fellowship that He's established between me and the rest of you here in this forum. Aside from Him, you're my lifeline and you all provide me with a much-needed outlet when no one else who's close to me gets any of this (my desire, interest, love, passion, etc.), or even allows me to express myself when I'm bursting at the seems with a new discovery.
Wes, if you're reading this I want to say keep up the great work on your site and know that I've also enjoyed our email exchanges and IM chats to date. I have a feeling we'd be pretty good friends if we lived closer to one another.
Who am I kidding? Boy, I could probably say that about dozens of you who have been so generous and kind with your words of encouragement and support not to mention your confirmation that what I'm "seeing" is not that far-fetched (ok, maybe sometimes it is! HA). Thank you to all of you. You have no idea what this community means to me as we fellowship together with one another on a regular basis always contemplating and seeking our Lord Jesus Christ's return.
What We're Praying/Talking About
Our faith in action, or our small contribution in trying to apply what we're taught in Hebrews 5-6 and James 2:17-26 for the benefit of our dear brothers and sisters within the Body of Christ...

WOW; as you know, JRed, I just got saved a couple of months ago; renewing my faith, as I call it, since I have been saved...how many times over the span of my 47 years here on earth? Too many to recall. Anyway, I seek a church that will ACKNOWLEDGE me. I want people in the church to actually KNOW my name. I attended Dr. Paul Stanley's church one time in Atlanta several year ago. I was looking for a church then, as well. (I lived in Atlanta for 14 years). It was like walking into an institution. The church was huge; it is televised. The people whisked back and forth like so many corporate employees. No one had anything to say to me. I even confronted several people, and they shook me off with no more than a point of a finger when I asked them which way to go. I walked out in the middle of the service; yes, the televised service. I was sitting as close to the front as I could get. I was shown on t.v. taking my 2 little girls and leaving.
I found a church here in S.C. where I now live, but some of the people are fake; I can tell this.
I asked about starting a Bible study at my house, since I work nights and can't attend the weekly one's at the church. No one has responded.
Is there some way we could start an online study? All of us here at LUF (Look Up Fellowship) can get in a Skype chat room or conference call together? I use Skype for my job. It is free and you can call people on conference for free. I so need to get more involved, lest I stray, as I am apt to do...please let me know about this.
Regards to you all...
I agree with all you said and yes, this is a great place to fellowship. This site tackles the topic of bible prophecy like no other.
Lititia,
If you are going to church to meet people and make friends you better take the time to put yourself in situations that allow for that to happen. I attend a Catholic church here in Los Gatos, Ca. Like any institution, there are small groups or clicks. But, by volunteering and getting involved my wife and I and our kids are now one of the better known families. That doesn't mean we are "on the inside." Not quite. What it does mean is that we know most everyone and they know us. But to be sure, we know enough (about 5 families very well) and we can open ourselves to them and they to us. It is a very nice balance.
You can join any group and make friends. Just give it time and keep the faith of Christ in expanding your ministry. Because that is what we all are, ministers onto one another. JRED has done that here. He is leading by example and we all would do well to take his leadership as a guide to increasing our own efforts.
JRED, you da man! Your commitment here is just amazing. With events unfolding so quickly and new leads ever popping up, I would suggest a side site where we can all share our own research and sites.
I love your take on what you find, however, i find myself getting bogged down trying to pull some of your data from out of your posts. If there were a side chat channel where we would assist each other and perhaps even help you, that might help all us get a bit more from this community.
Presently, I see things coming together quickly. POTUS, SPEAKER, and LEADER are governing like they will not need to run for reelection. Moreover, I think Daniel's Timeline is the best data we have on end times at the moment and that we will see things change dramatically this summer and fall. July 4-11 is another period that could be dramatic. Therefore, we need to help in focusing on different subjects and reporting in. JRED can't do it all but he sure can give guidance and the platform to connect the dots.
Bottom line, you get out what you put in. I'm am here to help if I can.
In Christ,
D Randall
PS. Upon seeing what is going on in Iran, when we see evil rise here in the US, are we to take to the streets? Are we to put our faith to work or are we to sit and wait for the express flight out of here?Guidance would be nice on this. I feel a very strong urge not to be passive.
Hi Jeff!! We are regualr readers of your site and Brother D's. I thought it may interest you to know that Brother D wasn't actually the first to coin the term "churchianity". It has been around for at least a decade near as we can figure.
Maybe you are not aware, but there is a HUGE number of real Christians that been out of the "system", called by the Lord to do so, for many years. It has been speculated,by fairly reliable sources, that there are more OUTSIDE of organized church, than inside. Not the bitter, or hurt or such, but real Christians who cannot "do church" as it is usually practised in most buildings.
We are not "alone" per se, we meet in small groups, with ONLY the exaltation of the Jesus being our focus, no "priest" or paid clergy, the Lord is our Pastor, the Great Shepherd leads. The Word of God is lived, accountability maintained, discipline practised, worship, is led by the Spirit, because we are worshippers, it is our lifestyle. We don't come together to get our social needs met, we come to sit together at the feet of Jesus, because we have learned to follow the Lamb of God wheresoever He goes. Our time together is focused on Him!!
This link is to an article we read many years ago while were struggling with feeling called out of "churchianity", but didn't really understand what the Lord was saying.
http://www.theschoolofchrist.org/read/articles/escape-from-churchianity.html
If you look into this area, you will find a whole "world" of real Christians, contending for their faith, living the Word, somewhat akin to home church groups that meet in countries where freedom is limited. The difference is, we do this by choice in order to serve the Lord and one another as He directs. The trappings and shortfalls of institutional "church" has resulted in the Lord calling folks out for at least 15 years that we know of. Brother D is actually rather "main stream" to us.
In addition to those who have left churchianity, there is also an awakening underway of young men who are rising up, taking the Word of God very seriously, young lions if you will. They are doing as Jeremiah said in 6:16
"This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls."
It seems the Lord is restoring HIS church, preparing HIS bride to be one without spot or wrinkle, whose love is for the Bridegrom and Him alone. He is more than ENOUGH!!
Maranatha!!!
Here is link to several articles, many written years ago, that descibe in more detail what you outlined in this article. Many answers for why "the rant" became necessary.
http://www.theschoolofchrist.org/category/read/articles/ekklesia-articles-read
We are the "called out ones", the ekklesia, and we need to understand the difference between BEING the church and going to church.
D/L
AMEN !!!
Thats what I'm talking about.
WOW, is right! JRED, I only just found out about your site 2 months ago, but I have been on every day since. My family and I live in northern VA, close to DC, and we dont attend any church, as they are all to big and show-y.We go to Chuck Baldwin's website,http://chuckbaldwinlive.com/. Though I go to Michael Boldea's website on Saturday,http://www.handofhelp.com/index.php. I heard about him and his grandfather, Dimitru Duduman, from Steve Quayle's site.Read especially "Message for America".
Lititia, I think that a chat conference would be good for most of us as there are too many apostate churches out there, and in the coming days, we need to cling to His Word and keep our head up with encouragement from each other. In the meantime, I will look up the other website mentioned.
Truth be told, I wandered far away from Him,these past 14 yrs, got sucked into New Age, occult, lots of things that are now in the blood. Only now, 3 yrs ago, when my son was born, did I make a conscious decision to give my life back to Christ, like when I was a young teenager.I am eternally grateful that these past couple yrs he has shaken me loose from those things and taken me back in all my shame.PRAISE GOD! especially in these endtimes! JRED, you and your family will be in my prayers.Peace and grace be with you from our Lord Jesus Christ.
Connie
Real churches are almost extinct. Now, you will mostly find scattered saints - individuals who still remain faithful in Jesus Christ despite the lack of an organized group.
To my brother in the Lord who said:
"The trappings and shortfalls of institutional "church" has resulted in the Lord calling folks out for at least 15 years that we know of."
Unbeknownst to me at the time (but I know now!), I left churchianity in 1981 and have not found any untouched "church" since. That would be 28 years ago. Since then I have seen miracle upon miracle in my life and the Lord teaches me straight from His Word. Even after painstakingly searching for a church home, I too have left amidst services because of the milque toast or flat out lies being taught therein. One place told the congregation that we didn't need to bring our Bibles as they showed the Scriptures on the screen via powerpoint. Not bring my Bible? That sounded like the Dark Ages to me! I have witnessed mainstream TV "preachers" fall by the wayside, watched the Emergent movement roll over every Churchianity group like a tidal wave, and the Great Lie has permeated the whole body of pseudo-believers like a dense fog.
I wondered why I felt so compelled to not go to church. I blamed myself for rebelling against God and sought His face about this. Looking back I can see the miraculous Hand of God in my life after being led away from the lies in our own congregations, and the Word is more alive to me now than ever.
This past year has been one of finding fellowship online with new found Christian friends who are alive and on fire for Jesus. Just yesterday the Lord placed another one of His children in my life. All of us pray for one another and enjoy fellowship outside the trappings of churchianity and it is just AWESOME.
Thank you, brother, for your post. It has blessed me in that I am now freed from any remaining tidbits of guilt about not going to "church." WE are the church, it is not the institutionalized rote the masses are being fed.
~Sister in the Lord
My family's "church story". We went to an ELCA Lutheran church (even though we didn't agree with some things...like infant baptism). My hubby and I enjoyed the structure of the service which often seemed contradictory to those who knew us because we were so outgoing and often thought "outside the box". With four pastors, it was easy to find a style that you could relate to. We were also active teaching Sunday School to Second Graders. We were known for being unorthodox although nothing negative was ever said to us. As the Pastors retired or took other callings, there were replaced by younger Pators. We found ourselves unable to relate to their teachings. By this time, we had our daughter and felt that church was important. We would often leave our church service and listen to the Lutheran service on the Christian radio station and felt like we learned more from those lessons.
So, then we started attending a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and our daughter attended the school there. Once more we became active in the church although we operated on the fringes. We were active in the modern service that met in the school gym. In fact, at one of the regular services in the main sanctuary we were approached as if we were guests because people didn't recognize us as members. When we moved to SC, we found only one Missouri Synod Lutheran church locally and it did not have a large youth community. So, it was off to find another church. We were attending a church that had lots of satellite locations (which we were attending one). My husband called it a concert with a movie because it had a live band and then we watched the lesson on the screen. Soon enough we found that we could not reconcile the pastor's leadership with what we knew to be true. So, we've been looking for a chuch home ever since. We think we've found a Baptist church with a Pastor who teaches meat and not milk. It is also has a good youth program. We'll have to give it time and see how it goes.
We do not believe the church is a brick and mortar building and we do not feel that any one denomination as it all right. We do believe fellowship is important and especially need a leadership that recognizes the times. I have found more fellowship with people on the net and on boards than I have people from a church. I'm fortunate in that our immediate family is in agreement and aware of the times we live in. At least we don't have that battle to fight!! We also believe it is better to leave a congregation than to imply agreement with apostate teaching by continuing to attend.
I think I'll church stories will change drastically in the not too distant future, but in the end the church as a true community will be stronger.
or "even allows me to express myself when I'm bursting at the seems with a new discovery"
You are not alone for many of us are also unequally yoked to those still totally plugged into the matrix of this world and its deceptions. They are totally deaf and blind even when we can contain no longer scting as if we didn't say a thing...blocked ears that refuse instruction because of their lack of nutrition and having a full cup/vessel full of the WORD/Manna from the Spirit that quickens the mortal flesh.
I can agree with your post. I have only been following your site for over a week. I love it.I am very much into end times, prophecy. More so in the last 6 mos- almost an urgency and a knowing we are nearing closer to the end. I have been saved for 25 years since the age of 8. I am blessed that I have been able to keep the faith and stay close to Him since that time. I have to say as regards to the church if I had at any time depended on the people in the church or was swayed and based my life on their choices I would have been backslidden a long time ago- christians come and go and I have to ask daily for the love of God to allow me to see them through God's eyes when they make mistakes and make me mad since because I am a christian I am counted among them in the world. God is able to keep us strong, give us wisdom and lead us in all decisions. Right now we are attending a pretty good church here in SC. I genuinely am glad to be a part of it as it is very outreach minded, multicultural, and the messages are right on and have the Holy Spirits name on them. But we know not to get attached to the leaders or a church because if they ever did start going a different direction we will not be led down the wrong road. But if any are interested you can watch the services live on the internet at rwoc.org. But among the churches to choose from it has been good and the people are so nice- so many are getting their lives right with God and set free every Sunday and that is the most important thing. Blessings, and keep up the good work!
The Sermon You'll Never Hear at the MEGA CHURCH....
1 Corinthians 9: 13-18 * 13.
* Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar?
* 14.
* In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.
* 15.
* But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.
* 16.
* Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!
* 17.
* If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.
* 18.
* What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.
If you asked most people, sitting in the pews and fancy chairs of churches today...who is most like Paul...your pastor, or a regular Joe or Jill in the congregation...they would surely believe it's the pastor...I'm sure the "paid preacher" would claim this as well, having given up all the riches of the world (as if any riches are guaranteed to us who are out there swinging it every day...!)
Paul's boast was that he "preached the gospel free of charge". So as not to "hinder the gospel". This lack of understanding has created a double edged sword in American churches. First; entitlement on the side of the pastor. What power does a man have, if he is only doing his job? The power of the org chart...not the power of God, necessarily. What does an unbeliever expect to hear from a man whose living depends on preaching? Preaching.
The walls are up, the hands are on the wallets...and the ears are closed.
Second; lethargy on the side of the congregation. Waiting for the "pros" to do the work. Paul would rather have died than have someone rob him of his boast...providing the gospel free of charge....
It's time for the Pauls in the congregation to rise up and claim this boast...which no paid clergy on earth can boast...may we begin providing the gospel for free...and may more paid clergy claim this boast for themselves. This is not to say that taking pay as a pastor is sin..(Paul refers to accepting gifts himself) .but the attitude seems to be...unless I get paid, I'm not expected to do it. Then, once I get paid...it's time to write books, go on a speaking tour.. etc. etc. It becomes more of a career path than a calling. Each highly paid mega speaker gives authority to the author, and they have created their own little book and conference club...(I know this sounds harsh)
I can identify with so many who are being called out of the "church" and am seeing God lead clearly, and in power, in both small ways and big. Simple obedience to the savior. I attend THE MIDWEST MEGA-CHurch since 1991..and yet have taken Jesus up on his offer of...
Taking his yoke, learning from Him, and following Him...HE HAS ALOT TO SAY...To each of us..
What I found is, if you aren't taking His yoke...someone will put theirs on you...
if you aren't sitting at his feet...someone will have something to teach (sometimes right sometimes not...
And if you aren't following Him...someone will be willing to lead you in their mission, whether it's from God or not. In many ways, the "church" has taken the place of the voice of Jesus...may it be so no longer!
AMEN..sorry for the long post.
there is a website where you can start your own chats and get rooms for free. I tried to organize one once upon a time on youtube but it seems that everyone was having too much fun fighting over their own beliefs and didn`t really want fellowship--this is just a suggestion
http://www.chatzy.com/
On most points I can readily agree with Brother D however, he rants and leaves no room for discussion to take place. That bothers me quite a bit for some reason.
Here is the example that got me thinking about his doctrine.
He said that Christmas was pagan holiday and that we are told not to put up trees etc... as pagans do that. My problem with that is the same problem that Paul had. Paul was very clear that "if you esteem a day esteem it to the Lord, if you do not esteem a day, then esteem it to the Lord"
God is not pleased by our traditions but our traditions cannot separate us from the LOVE of GOD which is in CHRIST JESUS. There seems to be a very dangerous drive to make the church into Israel but please please remember Jesus was not pleased with Israel and her traditions either.
If you celebrate Christmas then celebrate it to the Lord. Magnify HIM. If you don't, then don't but still give all Glory to God. I can agree that it was started as a way to appease two groups of people but celebrating Christmas isn't going to send anybody to hell.
I've been praying for fellowship for awhile. Yesterday, the still small voice said "this is your fellowship"
God bless
To Anonymous from RWOC...
We have actually driven 190 miles just to visit RWOC.
The outreach there is wonderful. Ron has some of the most amazing insight of any teacher I've heard recently.
And Fig is just crazy! Those teens have got to be the hungriest kids for God I've ever seen.
If we lived closer, we would be there more often.
There have been times I've heard Ron teach something that I don't agree with, and he's had some guest speakers that I wouldn't even allow in my home, but I still like to watch him on TV when I get a chance.
You're blessed to have a teacher like that near by.
May God truely bless you as you continue in His Will, may He ever increase your wisdom, knowledge & revelation into the scriptures, in Christ, & may He increase you ever in His Spirit! I pray to God that He would really open up His Will to you & put you right exactly were He wants you!
I pray that we would all be unified in Christ, all with one accord with the purpose of edifying one another in Christ & doing the Will of our Father! May we go forth with the boldness of a lion, in truth & in love, without the fear of man, in leading & guidance & true demonstration of power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the things that be of God namely the Gospel (Jesus Christ & Him Crucified).
May God ever lead all of us His children in Christ and ever keep us from the lusts and desires of the flesh, the temptations of this world and all of satan's traps & snares (for there are many). May He ever keep us ever so close to Him, to walk His straight & narrow, to be in the center of His Will at all time, and to be led a guided every step of the way, that He would live in us and do His Will to us, in us, and through us and that we would ever grow daily in our faith further anchored in Christ & the Cross! Praise God for giving us His Only Begotten Son our Lord & Saviour Jesus THE Christ! I also pray that He would remove all the spiritual blinders off the rest out here that are without Christ so that truely seeing the truth they too might be saved and be welcomed into the family as a fellow brother or sister in Christ, how awesome!
I pray that all of you would join in agreeance with similar prayers, God is AWESOME, may His Will be done!
With love,
Your fellow servant & brother in Christ!
Chris
I am so grateful for this site. I have found the fellowship here that I've been looking for and haven't been able to find elsewhere, with like-minded believers who love the Lord fervently and look forward to His coming. Even though I love and care about all of our brothers and sisters - and all the unsaved, also - I have noticed in my life that it isn't often that I find places that feel like home, friends that seem closely connected somehow. I feel that here, I feel at home here. I've enjoyed immensly the fellowship, reading all of Jeff's insights, and hearing everyones comments and input. And I also love the care that this group shows for each other, like Troy recently. I hope, Jeff, that no matter where you continue on from here, that you will always keep Look Up Fellowship. That it will only continue to grow. It is an enormous blessing, as are you with all that you share with us.
God bless you always.
I go to a pretty large church.
It is multi/non denominational.
www.gcccpray.com
I have been going there for 10 1/2 years now, after going from Methodist to Seventh Day, back to Methodist to non denominational etc. Before settling at GCCC.
I go to the Saturday night service as I still believe the sabbath was never meant to be changed to Sunday. "One" of the things I think the Seventh Dayers had right.
I believe the doctrine at GCCC is sound.
Infant dedication, believers baptism. salvation through Christ and Christ alone. Basic Christianity 101 with bring your bible to church even with the teleprompter and read it daily.
I have been studying the end times scriptures for 10 years and found many websites, date setters and non date setters. Some disappeared as their dates came and went. Others I felt had unsound doctrine so I never went back.
I've only been here a couple of months and haven't found anything Jeff puts out that I totally disagree with. I think some things are a stretch, but I am sure many or all here would find some of my thoughts a stretch too.
I consider this site my small group and as JRed is going on hiatus, I can catch up on some stuff. The 6/24 posts alone will take time.
God Bless you my brothers and sisters in Christ. ;)
