Lovely.
Check out what our fellow American citizens in Los Angeles, CA are participating in these days.
You have to wonder what Nazi Germany's Joseph Goebbels would've accomplished with today's modern technology and especially tools like YouTube.
iWATCH Citizen Program: Spy On Your Neighbor Propaganda
Police Chiefs across the country are supporting a community watch project in the name of 'anti-terrorism' that encourages citizens to spy on each other and report any suspicious behavior to police.
My favorite quotes from this Public Service Announcement?
"No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices."
"If you see something, say something."
Of course, I'm being sarcastic. What is this? Come on. Seriously? Isn't this common sense?
Program materials list 9 types of suspicious behavior that should compel people to call police, and 12 kinds of places to look for it. Among the indicators:
> If you smell chemicals or other fumes.
> If you see someone wearing clothes that are too big and too heavy for the season.
> If you see strangers asking about building security.
> If you see someone purchasing supplies or equipment that could be used to make bombs.
That's just a few of the things citizens are asked to watch for, which begs the question: Are we really that stupid? Have we become a nation so dumbed-down that we've lost our ability to critically analyze things like people and any given situation properly?
I guess so because these are all common sense reminders so why do we need another government funded Public Service Program like this? It just seems so ridiculous to me and a giant waste of money.
Look, I'm all for exercising common sense and reporting suspicious, criminal behavior whenever you see it in order to help safeguard our society. I mean, you can't just let crooks walk into your neighborhood and think they can set up shop and terrorize its residents.
But this iWATCH Citizen Program is a completely different animal I think. I always take issue when the government starts to ask its citizens to their job for them. After all, it's not like this nation has been bombarded with one terrorist attack after another since 9/11 so why the sudden shift in policy? It's not like they're justified in feeling like the only way we can begin to get an upper hand on the terrorists is by having regular people like you and me actively looking for things to report.
Again, there hasn't been an attack to warrant this kind of program. Heck, there hasn't even been a credible threat that I'm aware of to warrant this type of program.
No, to me this smells like just another subtle form of conditioning to get people used to the idea of living in a society where Big Brother is their master and he continues to tighten his grip little by little. It's about turning your friends and family into snitches and making them feel ok about it so that when Christians are classified as 'terrorists' (wait, didn't that already happen?) they won't feel so bad about turning us in when asked to.
That's why the program is also designed to ease reporting by providing a Toll-Free Number and Web Page that the public can use to alert authorities. Nice. Now anyone with a grudge can claim that I'm acting 'suspiciously' because they saw me standing outside praying with my eyes closed, or because I walked to the mailbox with my Bible in my hand.
Surprisingly, the ACLU agrees with me. American Civil Liberties Union policy counsel Mike German, a former FBI Agent who worked on terrorism cases, said the indicators are all relatively common behaviors. He suspects people will fall back on personal biases and stereotypes of what a terrorist looks like when deciding to report someone to the police.
"That just plays into the negative elements of society and doesn't really help the situation."
Right. Either they'll fall back on personal biases and stereotypes or they'll use it to get revenge on that 'annoying Christian who inflicts mental abuse' by handing out religious tracts and talking out loud with neighbors about Jesus Christ and the Gospel loud enough so everyone can hear it whether they want to or not. Yep, just another sign of the times and the lateness of the hour we're living in I'm afraid.
It's all quite ironic though because while it's great that these people shown in the video (the ones who are actively participating in this program today) are watching, they're watching for the wrong things!
Watch And Pray
Luke 21:36 (KJV) Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Amen!
