Today's post is not about legalism or works, but about something I haven't been able to get off my mind lately.
It's also not a salvation issue. I repeat that it's also not a salvation issue, but has more to do with the process of sanctification.
As all of you know, sanctification is an on-going process that begins the moment we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and doesn't end until we leave this earthly body.
The Lord is the One who will complete what He started in us. Our only role then is to pursue sanctification from the moment of our salvation in as much as always confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness, living obediently to His Word, and running towards holiness and righteousness as often as we can.
Now, the caveat to all of this, of course, is that even though the short list I just offered above is a list of "actions" or a "list of things we can do after salvation" we also need to be careful that we never fall into the trap of thinking that we're the ones in control, or that we're the ones that will ultimately determine what happens.
Only our Heavenly Father in Heaven can turn that pursuit of sanctification, those steps in obedience, that run towards holiness and righteousness, into a life that's pleasing to Him as well as one that will fulfill His plans for humanity.
Look at your life today. For the past week, God has been stressing to me the importance of doing just that. If you're anything like me, then I'm sure that some of you would have to admit that your actions don't always match up to your words.
Psalm 111:10 (KJV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Isn't it true that if we give more lip service than produce fruits through our actions that we're really saying that we don't believe God's Word? How can that not be the case? I mean, if we truly feared God like we're supposed to, then we would tremble each and every time we sinned, falling to our knees in tearful repentance even though we know fully well that His grace and mercy will cover us.
Our salvation never gives us a license to sin, but something I've been seeing a lot more of these days and even battling in my own life to a frightening degree is this deceptive, subtle spirit that tries to twist one's faith into something along the lines of a free pass:
"Oh, well, Jesus died for my sins past, present, and future so He already probably knew I was going to slip and fall and do this. It's not a big deal. It's only one small sin. Gosh! It's not like I've been living like this for awhile now. I've been a model Christian for weeks -- no, months -- and it was only a matter of time before I sinned."
Yes and no. Did you catch that? Do you see why that type of thinking is so dangerous? Look, yes, we'll continue to sin until our final breath. Hopefully, if we're growing in our relationship with Jesus Christ, then over the years it will become less and less, but it will never truly go away because our spirit will always battle the flesh until the flesh is not longer a stumbling block to us.
I think about the Book of James:
James 2:24 (KJV) Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
A person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. The context? Just look at what Abraham was willing to do in order to understand the context. He feared God to the point where he was willing to sacrifice his own son for Him! Man, that's powerful isn't it? It's the willingness of a man who is willing to do anything -- even offer up his own precious son -- because he feared (loved) God more than anything else.
Obviously, God stopped him and in a crude paraphrase of the Scriptures pretty much said to Abraham: "You get it! You understand that I am a treasure that's worth giving everything up for -- even your own child!" It was at that moment, when Abraham's actions got to that extreme, when the Angel of the Lord knew that Abraham finally "got it", right? It was clear that Abraham feared God because he was willing to give it all up.
So, again, a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. It's also important to note that this is not a contradiction to what Paul teaches about how we're justified by faith alone. Again, in context here, James has explained that we are justified by faith, but it's a "working faith" or a "living faith" and not a "dead" one. It's a faith that produces actions. That's the type of faith we're after and the type we're justified by.
If Abraham is too much of an "extreme" example for you, then just consider Rahab the prostitute.
James 2:25 (KJV) Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
The illustration of Rahab the prostitute is used for that reason. Rahab risked her life to allow the Israelite messengers to hide in her house, and when the authorities came looking for them she committed treason by lying to the officials and telling them that the Israelite messengers went another direction. Her faith for God was so strong that she put her life on the line.
I'm sure that some will oppose and that's ok. I'm not sure what the Lord is working out in your life at the moment in His dealing with you. All I can tell you is that this is what has been on my mind lately and so I wanted to share it.
It reminds me of another aspect to all of this. What do we call a body without a spirit? A corpse. If we say that we believe in the one, true God, and that we believe in His Son Jesus Christ, and that we accept His free gift of salvation, but we don't have any actions to prove it then we're nothing but a corpse. That's why "action" and "doing something" is so much more important than "just believing" in Him.
Again, this is not about salvation. It's also not about going out and trying to do a bunch of stuff to make up for any lack of works to this point in your life. Heck, even movie stars give millions of dollars to various charities. It's mainly about a change of heart. Remember what Jesus said to the lukewarm person about how He's still knocking on the door, and He just wants them to let Him in finally.
You know, I also think about Baptism. Baptism was an action that's appropriate to this discussion today I think. Typically, it's a public action that people did right after they got saved. Aside from when I was a little baby, I've never been Baptized since.
The question that invariably follows mention of Baptism is: "Can you be saved without being Baptized?" It's a good question, and probably worthy of its own separate entry here. I'm sure it might even create a mini debate in the Comments Section.
I'm not hear today to debate that issue either, but if I'm being completely transparent then I also need to mention how this has been weighing on me too lately. After everything we just looked at, how can Baptism not be an integral part of a believer's sanctification process after they make a decision for Jesus Christ?
I mean, we're going to say we believe and then God tells us to go get Baptized, and then we ignore Him. If we're being honest, wasn't Baptism the first action of a believer? I'll tell ya, the Book of James has been having a profound impact on me this week for sure! I've been left with this thought that: "Ok, I say that I'm a believer, but I'm not willing to do the first step of obedience, which is Baptism..." Yet, it doesn't matter because most churches that offer Baptism after making a decision for Christ won't do it for you unless you become a member of their church. Sorry, I'm getting a little side-tracked here.
What good is our faith if we keep it to ourselves and no one can see it in action? If a stranger looked at just your actions would they still know that you're a Christian by what they see you doing, or do you look like anyone else on the street that they see?
Christians aren't called to be "just anyone else" because we serve a God who's not "just another god" and it's time we starting to realize that and do something about it.
I for one plan to try to do much more in this late and urgent hour. Stay tuned because it should be exciting watching what God does.
Proverbs 25:2 (KJV) A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.
Lastly, just for emphasis (and to avoid any unnecessary debate here) please understand that I'm not promoting a "do-a-bunch-of-stuff-and-you'll-be-saved" type of theology here; not at all. I'm merely saying that if you are saved, then you'll do a bunch of stuff.
We are saved by one reason and one reason only -- the blood of Jesus Christ. No amount of "good works" is gonna erase all the junk that we've done in our lives. Jesus is our only path to forgiveness and salvation and eternity.
What We're Praying/Talking About
Our faith in action, or our small contribution in trying to apply what we're taught in Hebrews 5-6 and James 2:17-26 for the benefit of our dear brothers and sisters within the Body of Christ...

The Holy Spirit has been impressing something exactly like this upon me!
Working out my salvation with fear and trembling has taken on new meaning in these days of evil.

I agree

Interesting post Jeff! I was baptized as a baby myself but in 1976, I decided to get baptized (full immersion). It made a big difference in my walk of faith. It not only strengthened my faith walk but the temptations became stronger for awhile. God helped me get through them and I became stronger. Go for it!
Jeff,
Following the Lord in baptism is our first act of obedience. I encourage you to pursue it.
BTW, I love your blog and check it constantly!

Yeah, I mean it's probably a good thing no one told me how hard it would be to be a Christian. It is a daily, moment by moment walk!
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." - Ephesians 2:8-10
You are correct and the Bible is very clear on the order of things. Salvation THEN works, not works then salvation.
More importantly note that the works we are to do have already been planned by God beforehand FOR HIS PURPOSES and not our own.
This is just so weird. The one thing on my heart today was sanctification and that was the subject of the article I wrote today for my blog. Imagine my surprise when I began my daily look at the world of news, etc. and found that you had written on the same subject! God really does move His people together as a flock, doesn't He!
Just in response to a couple of the comments, and correct me if I'm wrong - but you mention that you have been Baptized. In other words - case closed - proceed with loving Christ. I don't get those who have to be baptized two, three, etc. times until it finally sticks - it's God that gives you the grace - not some different denomination that baptizes you better than all the rest.
My two cents.
Jeff,
it seems you are about to start your journey out of the daughters of Babylon, and the man made religious dog and pony show of the churches.
1 John 3:4 tells us that sin is transgression of the law, so if SIN is breaking the Torah, therefor what would true repentance be, and what would you STOP DOING.
Shaul tells us that after we are saved by faith, we establish the Torah in our lives, and that our enmity against the Torah is removed (Romans 3:31, you will never hear this verse in a christian church).
The Dogma of man made religion and the man made ordinances and their made up religions were nailed to the Cross.
The Set-Apart spirit is calling the followers of Messiah out of the Babylonian religious system and all her daughter offsprings.
Yahshua of Nazareth warned that those who are without Torah, and who do not do the will of his Father will be cast into the Pit, and trees that do not bear good fruit will be cast into the Fire. Well how does a follower of Messiah know he is bringing forth good fruit? Just read Psalms Chapter 1.
Yahshua warned from his first teaching that "I have not come to destroy the law or Prophets", he then warned that if we "do not keep and Do the LEAST of these commandments we would be LEAST in the Kingdom", he then goes in to explain IF YOU EVEN GET THERE AT ALL.
He then takes us forward to judgment day in Matthew chapter 7, and shows a great group of people, who call him Lord, but do not DO what he says, and do not DO the will of his Father.
"Depart from me you workers of Lawlessness" Lawlessness being ANOMIA in the Greek, A means without, Nomia is Torah.
So why does mainstream christianity teach the EXACT opposite of Yahshua and teach he abolished the law?
Why did Peter warn in 2 Peter chapter 3 that if anyone takes Paul's writings as a excuse for not keeping the Torah it would destroy them?
Satanism in its highest forms, teaches that "Lucifer" (you know the bright burning phospHORUS one, Horus born on December 25th) came to free you from the Law of the mean God, and you are now under the Grace of Lucifer and the new law is do what thou wilt? Sound familiar?
We do not keep the Torah to obtain forgiveness of Sin (Sin is transgression of the Torah), we keep the Torah because it teaches us to love the Creator as he commands, and because it teaches us how to love our neighbor as our self!
The time has come for gentiles to cry out in repentance for the pagan things we have inherited and leave the dog and pony shows of man made religion, and start following Messiah.
Jeff, just wanted to make one more comment.
Who does the Dragon make war with in Revelations?
Those who have the Testimony of Messiah and KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.
Who does the Messiah give the right to eat of the tree of life?
THOSE WHO KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, and Have the Testimony of Messiah
Messiah himself taught that if we did not KEEP and DO the Least of the Commandments, and that if we taught other not to keep the LEAST of them we were in serious problems. Therefor is someone teaches the exact opposite of what messiah teaches, and teaches that Messiah abolished the law, would they not be Anti-Messiah?
I hope you are starting to see why the Anti-Messiah is called the TORAHLESS ONE.
Do you not find it strange that modern christianity calls people that Keep the Torah legalist or "judiazers", yet those are the very people given access to the tree of life, while those without Torah are cast into the pit?
Are Satanist Correct and The law is abolished? Or is Yahshua of Nazareth correct, and the Law will not pass until heaven and earth does, and he commands us to teach people even the LEAST laws!
if we teach the law is abolished, how can we be followers of Messiah when this is the exact opposite of what he taught, would that not make us followers of Satan and his false religious systems?

I have been praying about this very thing in my own life!! Incredible!
"Signs and Works" will follow those who truly believe.
Unfortunately so many follow the signs and works instead.
God is calling me to move and take action in my part of the world. It was the original reason I started to blog myself.
Yes its time for believers to "work out their salvation" and start spreading the truth!!
Thanks J

you are right anon.*9 that christianity made a lame excuse by rejecting the laws, in favour of Self, to can practice cheap carnal religion.
but
the other way around - as you propose - is néither enough.
What You state, those 'who keep His commandments' , are still far from having His abundant and beautiful Life inside them, as well
Im almost..obsessed - having seen just short glimpses of it - by the beauty and Power of that Life; I do not have it because it is His', and He gives it to whom He wants, and I do chase after it
- and Im so sorry this is an open site but the splendour and kindness are amazing, absolutely amazing....It will not even have quéstions about the Law no more, or what to do, or what not, because that Life IS the Law and Love..
..it is fire and ice together; awe and care together - the problem is, that WE always seperate those.. becáuse we are seperated from Him
this prooves what darkened heart we have, how ultimate selfrighteous, and pridefully deluding ourselves that we actually understand something
..remember the parable of the treasure in the field: it doesnt use the word Treasure without purpose ( like no words are just coincidence ) ,
His Life inside You is like being filled with diamonds of unspeakable value - one will literally take care even fysically not to hurt, damage,or upset It..
The mountain what will throw itself into the sea ?
Thís is what will cause it to be thrown into the sea: His Life will do it FOR the soul who belongs to Him
Lord tell us You re close, now: make You all of us, who are poor and tired but waiting for You, to be one,
as You are One

1Cr 3:7 NIV - So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
1Cr 3:8 NIV - The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.
1Cr 3:9 NIV - For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
1Cr 3:10 NIV - By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
1Cr 3:11 NIV - For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
