Can We Silence 'The Voice'?

Are you kidding me?

Another Bible translation and one that treats the holy Word of God as if it was just any old book that you can take liberties with?

Have you heard about the newest translation called 'The Voice' yet?

New Bible Translation Focuses On Dialogue

The name Jesus Christ doesn’t appear in “The Voice,” a new translation of the Bible.

Nor do words such as angel or apostle. Instead, angel is rendered as “messenger” and apostle as “emissary.” Jesus Christ is “Jesus the Anointed One” or the “liberating king.”

That’s a more accurate translation for modern American readers, said David Capes, lead scholar for “The Voice,” a complete edition released this month by publishing company Thomas Nelson. Capes says that many people, even those who’ve gone to church for years, don’t realize that the word “Christ” is a title.

“They think that Jesus is his first name and Christ is his last name,” says Capes, who teaches the New Testament at Houston Baptist University in Texas.

Seven years in the making, “The Voice” is the latest entry into the crowded field of English Bible translations.

I suppose that this shouldn't be surprising. I mean, when sinful man would rather have his sins excused rather than exposed this is the natural result -- grab a hold of God's Word and make it say whatever you want it to say in order to make yourself (and others like you) feel better.

Still, how in the world can you even call this a Bible if the name 'Jesus Christ' is nowhere to be found within its pages!?! Yes, I know, 'Jesus The Anointed One' is in there, but that's not the same thing, and the holy Word of God isn't just another book to be taking liberties with.

Maybe in next year's version they can change the word 'sin' to 'no big deal' instead while they're at it. And several so-called 'Theologians' are 'ok' with this, I read.

I say we do all we can to silence 'The Voice' and other translations like this. I'm sorry, but this sort of thing just makes me sick.

I know why it's being done, but there's absolutely no need to change God's Word to make it more palatable or relevant. Those behind these translations forget that it's God's Word that changes us, and not us who are supposed to change it.

Lord, have mercy! Come quickly!

I find it interesting that the title chosen for this bible, I mean book, is the same as the hit TV series "The Voice". Hmmm... is this because the same "spirit" is behind both of these projects?

I appreciate the fact that a lot of purists are not going to care for this version, but you really need to give it a look. This version reads somewhat like a novel or a play, which may result in more people reading the bible.
I purchased a copy, (I have a copy of ALMOST every english bible,) and I enjoy reading it. It is easy to read and understand, based on how few people these days read beyond a 9th grade level, this is a good start. By 9th grade level I refer to the lack of people who read anything, much less the bible. If this version can reach these folks, and if they read it, they will also want to dig deeper into the word and then they can get a more traditional translation. First, they need to read, then we can work on improving their understanding of the Lord.

I guess I just have a problem whenever Christians feel like they have to dress up God's Word by making it more 'relevant' (in this case 'entertaining' like a novel or a play like you said).

Again, we weren't meant to change His Word. His Word was meant to change us. That's why I also believe that this notion that we should be happy because now people actually want to read it is absurd too, with all due respect.

Luke 24:45 says, "Then he (the Holy Spirit) opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures." There is a true spiritual component as to why the Word of God is complex and difficult to understand for people -- unless you are in a right relationship with the Lord and the Holy Spirit illuminates the Scriptures for you.

Above all, people should pray about it and keep at it -- not change it to a version that they approve of! Be diligent to seek the Lord. 1 Chronicles 28:9 makes this promise: "If you seek him, he will be found by you." Proverbs 8:17 says, "I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me."

I just think it's a real slippery slope when you start to take liberties with the holy, divinely inspired text like this, and then you run the risk of questioning every word/verse ("Did God really say that/mean that though?", which sounds like the serpent from Genesis, doesn't it?).

For me, these contemporary versions like The Message and now The Voice have no place in Christianity.

YBIC,
Jeff

The problem with translations like 'The Voice' is that they are polluted bread upon the shewbread tables of our hearts. If a person reads these and takes the words into themselves, you can expect health problems to start appearing such as heart disease sicknesses in general, along with a greater recovery time for them.

Jeff, I am with you as this is a red flag. Yeah, I get twinges of hope that there maybe people reached who weren't before, but what good is it if the only result is Lukewarm Christians. Did this bible remove parables too because they are too hard (insert sarcasm)? Jesus spoke in parables so we had to make some mental effort through our free will to understand it, but it wasn't so hard it required an intermediary interpretor. But it requires effort.

Tell me, what is so offensive to calling Him Jesus Christ. It is only offensive to those spirits who tremble at His name. His name has power and is important. Plus, New Ager's love to throw around names like Christ conscious individuals and messengers could be angelic OR demonic if you don't make the effort to discern the spirits, which New Ager's NEVER do. They are just happy to be talking with any.so-called enlightened being. I bring this last part up because if you are satisfied with tweaking Jesus Christ's name then you are suseptible to accepting another imitator who kind of looks and sounds like Jesus Christ. A HUGE red flag considering Jesus gave us this very warning that others would come in His name. And people wonder what's in a name? INDEED!!

“The Underground Christian Network” has an excellent audio teaching called “Bible Versions Controversy Explained”. In simple words, this message explains dangerous trends and teachings in the so called ‘modern versions’ of the Bible. A MUST HEAR for all Christians.

Jude 3
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

I've been reading various books and chapters in the voice and I have found it to be fairly accurate. Yes, yes, there is a slippery slope regarding apostasy and false words, however in this case the authors have tried diligently to be as accurate as possible while trying to get more people to read the bible.
I firmly believe that our first and foremost responsibility to our family and friends is to assure salvation for their souls. In James 5:20 "Know this: If you turn a sinner back from the error of his ways, then you will rescue him from the grips of death and cover the pain and consequences of untold sins" (The Voice). I have read this same verse in a number of other versions and the meaning is the same.
Understand, that the KJV or DR, or NASB are more accurate, but they also tend to be archaic to read. That is why I am advocating that those that don't read the bible now, maybe because of the archaic language should give this version a shot. Worst case scenario, they decide it isn't for them, best case scenario, they start asking questions, then you can direct them to more conventional fare. As James advised in James 1:19..."Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger..." HCSB
