I'm sure that even after sharing this video of Eugene Peterson telling us -- in his own words -- why he decided to write The Message, and what it's about, there will still be people who will rush to his defense.
My dear friends, this video clip says it all. It's a mere 1:48 long. The part I want you to pay close attention to and to prayerfully consider in light of Scripture begins around the 1:15 mark.
Right. Because we're the ones who have redefined the Holy Bible from it's original meaning, and that's why he just had to "recover" the truth for us. Furthermore, the Bible is all about us ("this is a story that you live into"), not God, right? Wrong!
Thus, he perverts the Gospel with half-truths (because heresies are best accepted when it sounds somewhat truthful). It's a 'Man-Centered Gospel' rather than the 'God-Centered Gospel' that it truly is.
I rest my case.
Now, let's contrast Peterson's words with what God's Word actually says about itself.
Simply put, God intended for us to be SANCTIFIED unto godliness by His HOLY WORD.
It's really that plain and simple. Plus, I'm no expert, but God's Word does sound rather 'moral' and 'axiomatic' and certainly 'dogmatic' too. Hmmm...
May I add that if reading the Bible proves difficult to some people, then that's to be expected since His Word is spiritually discerned and helping us to understand it is a ministry of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-14; John 14:26; John 16:12-15; Ephesians 1:17-18; Psalm 119). Why doesn't a former Pastor, a Christian, know that?
May I also add that if a congregation is having a difficult time understanding God's Word, then it's up to the Pastor to teach it to them (1 Timothy 3:2; 2 Timothy 2:24; Titus 1:9). Why doesn't a former Pastor, a Christian, know that?
Instead, Eugene Peterson's response was to create a perversion of God's Word that would make it easy on himself and easy on the flock entrusted to him by the Lord; a perversion from the pit of Hell that will lead countless numbers of poor souls to Hell if left unchecked.
Not on my watch (Jude 1:1-25)!

"Jeff, that's not what Peterson meant when he said..."
"Peterson's right and I don't understand what all the fuss is about..."
Genesis 3:1 (KJV) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Eugene Peterson: "I wanted to recover the fact that this is not a book of moral things, moral axioms, or dogmatic propositions, or ideas about how to live your life. This is a story that you live into."

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 (KJV) Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
1 Timothy 4:7 (KJV) But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
